The sort of most dramatic of the other plausible scenarios is that he became the victim of Asmat headhunters and all that implies. Does a great artist have to graduate from art school? The answer is no. There might be some great artist indeed studied an art school. But it does not mean that people have to study in an art school to become great artists. There  are a lot of great painters and calligraphers in Chinese history. But almost none of them ever studied in an art school.
